6 things you need to know before you start welding/h1>

What could be more dangerous than a tool that uses enough energy to join metal and, if used improperly, can injure you? While it's true that welding can be a little intimidating at first, with a little effort, time and the right tools, you can become good enough to do most jobs, and with practice you'll only get better.

1. Security: Absolutely NOT optional.

Before you even think about welding, make sure you have the right equipment, including a flame retardant jacket, safety glasses, welding gloves and an approved welding helmet. Helmets have advanced technologically in recent years. To make your job easier, look for an auto-darkening helmet like the ESAB or RHINO helmets. Make sure you have adequate ventilation or use a flue gas drainage system and make sure you have enough space for sparks when welding.

2. Welding processes: MIG, powder-filled wire and TIG./h2>

Don't get confused by these names. They are explained further in the text, from the easiest to start, to those that will require more skill and experience from the welder.

Wire welding uses wire spools where the wire passes through the gun, and a constant supply of wire minimizes starting and stoppingof the welding process and makes it easier for relatively inexperienced welders to create quality joints. Such welding is faster, more economical and more suitable for welding thin sheets.

There are two types of wire welding: MIG (metal inert gas) and flux cored wire welding. MIG welding relies on a constant flow of shielding gas to protect the weld from contamination. The gas is supplied through the welding gun from the gas cylinder. Difficulties with MIG welding are most visible in outdoor conditions, as wind can disrupt the process. Welding with powder-filled wire is used with or without shielding gas depending on the wire used. Those wires that are designed for use without gas are often recommended for outdoor use.

p>TIG welding (tungsten inert gas) is preferable for architectural works or in the automotive industry and for the production of decorative elements, etc., where the weld must look neat. It is also a good way to weld thin metal and sheet metal to achieve a seamless appearance. On the scale of complexity, the TIG method is usually considered the most difficult to learn, but it is not unattainable if you put in a little effort.

3. Input voltage: Here you have only two choices – 220V or 380V

In general, lower input voltages are sufficient for thinner material; a higher input voltage will allow you to penetrate thicker materials. Most beginners would benefit more from a machine that offers dual voltages (220v and 380v) that they can get used to.uti so that the safer they are at work, the more opportunities they have.>

4. User interface: Look for one that is intuitive and easy to use>

It can be tricky for a beginner to "choose" welding settings, so look for a machine that will do it for you through the logical steps of selecting the process, thickness and type of material to be welded, and the type of additional material (wire or electrode) you will be welding with. Good machines will automatically know what input voltage you are on and adjust the settings accordingly.

5. Material: Some processes and consumables are better for welding certain materials and may sometimes require additional tools

For example, you can weld aluminum with the MIG process, but you want to achieve a better result by using a guide gun to feed the consumable (aluminum does not feed well through a long cable). Can you weld different materials such as aluminium, steel and stainless steel in different thicknesses? Look for instructions from the manufacturer. If you find positive answers to your questions, you can be sure that you are getting a machine that will work well with you.

6. Pconsumable: "Consumable" is the industry term for welding wire, electrodes or grooving material used in welding

You must match the consumables to the welding process (see above). As you advance in knowledge and experience, you will begin to recognize nuanceare among the consumables and you will probably prefer certain manufacturers. ESAB or BOHLER offer consumables for almost any material or alloy, so they are always a good place to start.
